Have you ever notice your own posture when you are looking at the mirror? Or have you ever been told by someone that your posture is 'weird looking' or you are hunching too much? Fret not, we will be discussing more about what constitutes a good posture and how we will be able to maintain it.
Firstly, the definition of the word 'posture' is defined as a position whereby you hold your body while standing, sitting or even lying down. Therefore, when someone talks about good posture, there is more to just looking 'good'. Good posture actually involves training your body to stand, walk, sit and lie down at a point whereby it places the least strain on the muscles and ligaments while you are moving or performing weight-bearing activities.
Why is having a good posture important for us you may wonder? Is it only to look better? While looking good is one of the benefit, there is also many other ways it can help us.
It can prevent fatigue due to the muscles are being used more efficiently and therefore allow the body to use lesser energy
Prevents the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions.
Decreases the amount of strain on the ligaments in the spine
Helps in reducing the wear and tear of joint surfaces (knee) to help prevent the onset of arthritis.
In short, good posture helps to keep our spine healthy and young!
