Your neck, which is known as cervical spine, is made up of vertebrae that extends from the skull to the upper torso. There are few components that make up the cervical spine. This includes cervical disk, bones, ligaments, and muscle. All these structures has a possibility of causing neck pain.

Neck pain is less common compared to back pain but in most cases of neck pain, it is due to misalignment of the vertebra. Neck pain can also be caused by injury from a fall or an accident. Bulging or herniated disc might cause nerve compression which will lead to neck pain. The pain felt will travel down the arm into the hands or fingers. Signs and symptoms of neck pain may include

  • Stiffness

  • Tightness

  • Aching pain

  • Burning pain

  • Stabbing pain

  • Shooting pains

  • Pressure

  • Tingling

  • Sore muscles or tense in the neck, face, or shoulders

  • Restricted movements

There are several types of neck pain and one of it is known as mechanical neck pain. Mechanical neck pain is the general term that refers to any type of neck pain caused by placing abnormal stress and strain on muscles of the vertebral column.

Here are some tips that might help you in managing your neck pain while waiting for your visit to a physician

  1. Take a few days off from sports or activities that aggravate your symptoms

  2. Exercise your neck. Slowly stretch your head in side-to-side and up-and-down motions.

  3. Avoid cradling the phone between your neck and shoulder

  4. Do not use a neck brace or collar without checking with your doctor’s approval. If not used properly, this can actually make the problem worse

  5. Apply ice on your neck
